They are native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America. Most of their species live clinging to the trunks and branches of tall trees in tropical rainforests. The exception is the namesake of the family, the ground-dwelling pineapple (Ananas communis), which is grown for its delicious fruit in tropical regions all over the world. A number of their species and their hybrids attract attention with their strikingly variegated leaves, and many of them can be used as potted houseplants.

Közép- és Dél-Amerika trópusi, szubtrópusi vidékének lakói. Fajaik többsége a trópusi esőerdők magas fáinak törzsén, ágain kapaszkodva éli életét. Kivétel a család névadója, a talajlakó ananász, melyet ízletes gyümölcséért a Föld összes trópusi vidékén termesztenek. Számos fajuk és azok hibridjei feltűnően tarka leveleikkel hívják fel magukra a figyelmet, s ezért a dísznövény kertészet jóvoltából sokukban cserepes szobanövényként is gyönyörödhetünk.
