Cacti are drought-tolerant, columnar, spherical or disc-shaped plants of the Americas. They are particularly spectacular when they open their flowers in May and June. An interesting exception is the pereskia (Pereskia aculeata) which has shoots covered with foliage-leaves. Europeans first became familiar with prickly pear cacti (Opuntia). In their native countries, the mother-in-law's cushion (Echinocactus grusonii) and the Ferocactuses can grow up to 2 metres in diameter.

Az amerikai kontinens szárazságtűrő, oszlopos, gömb vagy lemez alakú pozsgás növényei a kaktuszok. Különösen májusi, júniusi virágnyílásuk idején látványosak. Érdekes kivétel a lomboskaktusz, melynek lomblevelekkel borított hajtásai vannak. Az európaiak először a fügekaktuszokat ismerték meg. A sünkaktusz és a hordókaktusz átmérője hazájában akár a 2 méter is elérheti.
