The oldest trees in the Garden are the Chinese ginkgo trees (Ginkgo biloba), which are over 200 years old. They appeared on the Earth about 300 million years ago, and their relatives are even older than that of the dinosaurs. In autumn, the foliage of the deciduous dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) turns reddish brown. This is the real living fossil! Thought to be extinct until the 1940s, only its fossilised remains were known, when living specimens were discovered.

A Kert legöregebb fái a több mint 200 éves kínai páfrányfenyők. Mintegy 300 millió éve jelentek meg a Földön, rokonságuk a Dinoszauruszokénál is régebbi. Ősszel rőtbarnára színeződik a lombhullató kínai-mamutfenyő lombja. Ez az igazi élő kövület! Az 1940-es évekig kihaltnak hitték, csak megkövült maradványai voltak ismeretesek, akkor találtak rá élő példányaira.
