Prairies are the treeless grasslands of the North American continent. One of its low-growing grasses is the buffalo grass (Bouteloua dactyloides). Among the many attractive flowering perennials of the lawns, the popular ornaments of our gardens are, for example, the cone flower (Rudbeckia) or the eastern purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), which is also important as an herb. Towards the south, prairies gradually give way to deserts. The landscape is characterised by yuccas, which are related to lilies, and some cypresses, which are resistant to drought, heat and winter frost.
